Asean Business Summit

The US-China trade war has left both countries reeling, but one region might have benefited from the tit-for-tat tariffs- and that’s Asean. The region’s trade outlook is looking bullish. Take Vietnam as an example: analysts say its economy grew by 8% as importers sought to avoid paying increased tariffs from the trade war. Now the region faces the task of making growth sustainable. At the 6th Bloomberg Asean Business Summit, we examine how countries can create their own sustainable growth models.

The trade war lingers. The US election looms. Political and civil unrest rocks parts of the world from Indonesia to Bolivia. Against this global backdrop, Southeast Asia must navigate economic and geopolitical headwinds to keep growing. Uncertainty over tariffs, shifting economic trends and changing US policy suggest countries with smart and diversified economies will end up winning.

Take Vietnam as an example. The country has emerged as a big winner from the US-China trade war. Analysts say its economy grew by 8% as importers sought to avoid paying increased tariffs from the trade war. Now Vietnam faces the task of making growth sustainable.

Stuck between a US-China power struggle, Southeast Asia has traditionally gravitated towards the US for strategic alliance instead of partnering with neighboring giant, China. However, with the US withdrawing from the TPP agreement, ASEAN members are reconsidering their options– the China-backed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

At the 6th Bloomberg Asean Business Summit, we look at how countries can create their own miracle growth models—from leaping up value chains with smart manufacturing, to becoming regional start-up and technology hubs, and optimizing their tourism sectors.
